It is the year 2020 and entrepreneurship is on the rage in Nigeria more than anywhere else in Africa.
Because of the vast nature of skills and services available in Nigeria and the fact that a majority of
the public sector is majorly focused on oil production and distribution, there is a growing need for
individuals to develop themselves and solve real problems in society.
But how do you even start a business, begin to make sales and grow to keep it successful?
We're here to get you started.
1. Find a gap: The most important step in starting up a business (which a lot of people skip) is finding a gap.
Look around you, your community, your friends, even your family. What problems do you see? What gap needs to be filled?
By identifying a gap you're halfway to developing your business idea. The second major part of finding a gap is identifying how to monetize your gap.
A business is not a business if you are not making sales!
That is a known fact and can be proven anywhere. You need to make sales to keep your business alive. So think of how best people will pay you to solve their problems for them.
And there you have it, your business idea has been developed on a solid-state.
2. Paint a picture for your bridge: Now you have a well-framed business idea that people are willing to pay for; how best do you sell it to your target audience? This is often called a unique value proposition (USP).
Your USP defines how best your product/ service can solve a problem or meet a need in the best possible way and better than your competitors (if any).
To discover your USP, look at what makes you different from your competitors. What can you do differently that would make your business stand out from the crowd and keep your customers coming back? It may be your pricing advantage, the value of your products/ service, your customer relationship or whatever unique thing you can offer that others cannot.
3. Create a business plan: A business plan is very crucial to your business as it defines important components such as your:
- Catchy and attractive business name and logo
- Why (the reason for starting the business)
- Goals, USP and core values
- Pricing model
- SWOT analysis
- Marketing channels
